I saw a TV commercial the other day for one of those products that promises to give you hours of energy in a little bottle. The man in the commercial groggily dragged himself out of bed, complained how long it took to make a cup of coffee, downed the little bottle, and cheerily went off to work. That's how I now feel in the morning - but not because of something I drink, but because my closet is finally organized and I get dressed for work in no time at all. I am no longer frustrated because I can't find the clothes I am looking for.

I started on my closet-organizing journey by deciding what groups to put each kind of clothes in - sweaters together, shirts together, pants together, etc. After that, I could see at a glance what I had and how many of each I really need, and got rid of the excess.

The next thing I did was to organize the clothes into "work" clothes and "casual" clothes on the hanging rods in the closet. My closet has the door on the right side and goes deep to the left, where it is harder to see and reach. So I put the work clothes on the right side of the closet where I can get to them quickly as I dress for work. I am in more of a hurry in the morning before work, and have less time to fool around looking for things. When I get home from work and get more casual, I have more time to dig deeper in the closet, so that arrangement is more appropriate for me.

I put up some medium sized hooks for those smaller items that seem to get shoved in the corner or fall to the floor. That's a great way to get all of the belts and ties all in one place. Also consider getting a set of hooks that hang from the top of the closet door. Just be careful that you don't put so much on those hooks that it becomes hard to close the closet door.

There are many other little tricks you can use, but you get the basic idea. It does not have to cost you much money, because you can find space saving shelving and hooks at your local dollar store. Why stress out every morning when you can make life a little easier on yourself?

An article in the August 15, 2009 edition of the Washington Post discussed closet organization. Katherine Salant reminds us that you "should not think of your closet as an ever expanding universe. Sure there are some older items to keep, but don't do it for sentimental reasons." She inspired me to focus this tip on closets.

Empty - This is the tough part. Take everything out of your closet. Ask yourself if you use it and is it more important than other things in the closet. Think about what is in style for your life (work, casual, etc.). You don't have to try everything on, but if in doubt have a "fashion show". This is a great way to get your kids to try on clothes - make it fun!

For the items you are getting rid of, consider

Selling (Craigslist, a garage sale or a Mom-to-Mom Sale for kids items)
Donating (see below for resources)
Trading (clothes swaps are becoming the thing)

Sure, we all want to hold on to sentimental items, but don't do so at the expense of having no room for what you actually wear.

Materials - If you use uniform hangers your clothes will fit better in your closet. Also, if you have suits, invest in suit and trouser hangers to minimize wrinkles. Consider see-through plastic containers to store your hats, scarves, etc. For shoes, you can get shoe racks or over the door solutions.

Zones - "Map" out areas or zones in your closet. Remember - a place for everything and everything in its place. You will need zones for your long-sleeve shirts, short-sleeve shirts, pants, etc. Don't forget about your accessories (hats, scarves, purses, belts, shoes, etc.) Use your higher shelves as "storage" for off-season or seldom-used items.

Putting it Back Together - Put all of your items back into your closet according to your zones you've established. When hanging, hang them from dark to light and from solid to patterned. Also, here's a tip to help you with the one-year rule (if you haven't worn it for one year, get rid of it): Hang all of your hangers backwards (hook facing you). When you wear an item, put it back normally (hook facing away from you). Next September, look for hangers that are still facing you. These items haven't been worn for a year and should be the first to go.

Maintenance - A good idea is to keep a box or bag for donation items at the bottom of your closet. When it fills up, donate it. For kids, you can even label a large box with the size for hand me downs or next year try-ons. Salant stated in her article "when you acquire a new item, you should remove an old item." Don't wait to purge again until you can't fit everything back in your closet.

You are making a presentation you have worked on for weeks and you know it's good. You are confident your boss is going to be impressed and you are ready to take on the world!

You shower, put on your make-up, dry your hair and open your closet door. You begin wading through your blouses looking for just the right thing to wear. Before you found the right one, did you have to pass by:

• Several blouses that did not fit?
• A blouse with a missing button?
• A blouse with a stain on the sleeve?
• Three blouses you bought in high school?
• And the blouse your mother-in-law gave you that you "wouldn't be caught dead in?"

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are a prime candidate to finally tackle that overstuffed closet! Did you know that most people only wear 20% of their clothes on a regular basis, 10% are set aside for special occasions, and the other 70% are hardly ever worn! Thinning out your wardrobe will save you time and stress. However, before you begin, make sure you have enough time to finish the project correctly (two to four hours for a small closet and up to six hours for a walk-in closet) and decide what types of items you want to store in the closet. Preferably, your closet should only house your clothes and shoes while other items such as photo albums, wrapping paper, tools and art supplies should be placed somewhere else in the house.

Before you begin, you'll need to gather a few supplies. If you need to purchase these items, it's always best to buy more than you need. You can always return anything you don't use and it will keep you from making a trip to the store in the middle of your project. Purchase the following:
• Plastic bins - various sizes
• Large, sturdy cardboard boxes
• Heavy-duty garbage bags

P - Pull It:

E - Evaluate It:
Look at each item and ask yourself:

"Is it outdated, without a mate, ugly, useless or moldy?" If yes, it's junk. Place these items into large, garbage sacks for disposal.

"Is it the wrong color, wrong style, wrong size, doesn't go with anything else in my wardrobe, something that makes me feel unattractive or I haven't worn it in a year or longer?" If yes, it's charity. Place these items into boxes or garbage sacks for transportation to a donation site.

"Does this item require action such as shoes that need new heels or a blouse that needs mending?" If yes, it's repair. Place these items into a box or bag and take them within seven days to an alternations or shoe repair place. When you are finished organizing the closet, put the box or bag in your car.

"Is this something I want to keep but not in my closet?" If yes, it's storage. Place these items in storage boxes or plastic bins and label them before moving them to a more appropriate location.

"Do I love this, does it look great on me, is it in good condition, does it fit me, do I get compliments when I wear it?" If yes, keep it!

A - Arrange It:
Now it's time to put your "keep" items back in the closet in their proper place. Place your clothes on your new plastic hangers (if applicable) and make sure the clothes and hangers are facing the same direction. Group together like items such as blouses, skirts, pants, jackets.

C - Containerize It:
Some smaller items will not go on hangers and you'll want to containerize them. Items such as purses, winter hats, scarves and gloves can be placed in inexpensive organizing bins on the shelves of your closet. Set up your expandable shoe rack and neatly place your shoes on it.

E - Enjoy It:
It is a great feeling to walk in your closet each morning knowing you can select any item on the rack, put it on and be ready to walk out the door! Enjoy your newly organized closet and the peace an organized life brings!

The brackets should be placed 2 to 3 inches below the lower shelf. This will be for the upper dowels. The lower dowel brackets need to be 38" above the floor. Slip your dowel rods in.

Create an Elegant Headboard With a Closet Door

I can't believe how many homes I go in where I see no headboard on the bed. Headboards have a solid purpose and that's not only to anchor the bed in the room visually, but to allow pillows to have a resting surface. They can be simple or ornate, the choice is yours but here's an easy way to create one.

Use a door! A door you say? Yes! Choose a closet sized door rather than a standard wall door. Plain or fancy, either will work but I prefer solid doors with recessed panels to give more architectural detail to the piece I'm about to create. You will find that closet doors also tend to be less expensive allowing for more quality in the piece for the same money.

1. Get measurements for the legs by measuring from the floor to the top of where you want your headboard to come up to on the wall, minus 2 inches. (This is so that the leg rails do not show above the head board).

2. Measure the distance between the rails on your bed frame.

3. Divide the measurement of your bed rail frame distance by two.

4. Find the center on the top of your door/headboard and mark it with a pencil.

5. Measure outward from that center mark, the 1/2 distance measurement you just took for the rails and place a mark. This will be the exact place the center of your legs will attach.

6. Cut legs out of 2x4's. Attach to the back side of the head board with wood screws to secure. Use a carpenter's level to make sure they are attached squarely.

7. Prime and paint the door and legs a neutral color and allow to dry completely.

Now the creative brain can kick in and really have some fun! Try these fun and easy ways to decorate your new head board.

Stenciling:
Border the outside edges of the door with a vine border then add floral designs to the recesses. I especially love doing this to a headboard that is painted deep brown or black as the design shows up so beautifully and it set off by the rich background.

Faux Finishing:
Paint the door then create granite or marble effects in the recesses. Even blended sponge painting can be gorgeous, and then paint the outside edge a contrasting color.

Raised Plaster Stenciling:
Add a border design to the outside edges, then a raised plaster central stencil design with joint compound to the insets. Let the joint compound dry for 48 hours before applying paint over the surface so that you do not to loose any of that beautiful raised detail.

Using the same color paint as you used for the door surface, paint over the design and allow it to dry to seal it completely. Apply a color wash of translucent wall glaze mixed with a darker, coordinating color over the design and wipe away the excess to reveal a much more detailed version of the design.

Cast Ornamental Plaster from a mold:
Any mold designs can create the most elegant and unique headboard. Molds are easy to use. Simply lubricate the inside of the mold by brushing lightly with mineral oil then fill the mold with mixed plaster of paris. Allow the plaster to set, remove the piece from the mold and let air dry completely.

Cast and arrange your molded pieces in the pattern desired then attach to the door with joint compound as the adhesive. Let dry 48 hours then paint and color wash as described above in the raised plaster stenciling paragraph. The look of cast plaster on your head board is so beautiful and appears to be carved right in to the head board. What an expensive look!

To finish your headboard, seal your design with a clear, non-yellowing sealer.

To attach the head board to the bed frame:

1. Stand the headboard up against the bed and mark a hole for each of the holes in the bed frame mounting bracket (standard with all metal bed frames).

2. Use heavy duty metal screws and purchase matching wing nuts.

3. Drill pilot holes for each screw hole you marked the same diameter as the screw and drill all the way through the leg.

4. Attach the headboard legs to the bed frame by inserting the screws all the way through the back of the legs and the bed frame then attach a wing nut and secure tightly.
