Save Floor Space in Your Living Or Bedroom Home Remodel

If you're considering a home remodeling project, chances are you are looking for more space in your home. You may not need as much floor space as you think! Check out these space saving ideas for bedrooms and living rooms:

Doors

Because doors swing out they occupy a lot of space in a small room. Consider re-hanging a door so that it swings the other way - for instance, a bedroom door can open into the hall. Other options are pocket doors that slide into the wall or sliding doors on closets.

Closets

Need more closet space in a bedroom? Are there adjacent spaces that can be appropriated for this purpose? For instance, maybe you can cut through the wall and add a little-used hall closet to you existing closet space. Consider re-organizing your closet space with shelves and drawers. 50 years ago most people were hanging dresses and suits, so closets left a lot of space for long hanging garments. Today most people are hanging separates, so your garment-hanging space can be cut in half. Use this space instead to store shoes or sweaters in drawers or shelves.

Wall Space

Renovate to put more things on the wall. Hanging cabinets in the bedroom can store clothes. Hang shelves or a television in the living room and save floor space. During remodeling you can build in little cubbies in the walls to store books or knick-knacks. If you have a room with a high ceiling, tall, thin cabinets or shelves can take advantage of this height. Instead of floor lamps, consider sconces or ceiling fixtures.

Furniture

Think about storage when selecting furniture. Look for coffee tables with drawers and ottomans with storage or that turn into guest beds. There is a wide selection of beds with storage underneath. In kid's rooms, you can buy a loft bed, which has room for a dresser or desk underneath it.
